Fun Fall Activities for Families

September 3, 2018, BY

Can you believe it’s already September? It seems like the summer months have just completely flown by. It’s that time of year again, time to say goodbye to our flip-flops and t-shirts and to say hello to boots and sweaters. Fall is right around the corner, but that’s no reason to head indoors until spring! Here in Canada, we’re lucky enough to live in a country where we can watch the leaves change colour and really enjoy the magic of the fall season. There are plenty of fun (and practically free) activities families can do outside in the fall.
  • Go Hiking: Going for hikes or long walks is almost better in the fall because you don’t need to worry about the heat, and you get to see the beautiful colors of fall leaves. Grab the family and go for a hike or leisurely walk through your local trails and take in the fall foliage and crisp air. You can really enjoy the magic of the fall season.
  • Apple Picking: Apple picking is fun and festive and is the perfect activity for those days where you find yourself stuck between summer and fall weather. You get to spend some time outside with your family and friends, and you get to leave with delicious farm-fresh apples. Plus, apple orchards make such stunning photo backdrops you can get some great photos of the kids.
  • Baking: What are you going to do with all those apples you just bought? Bake a delicious apple pie or dessert of course! There are plenty of fun fall recipes from pies to sweet desserts. Baking is a fun family activity that also teaches your kids math (measuring), how to follow instructions and kitchen safety. We post awesome recipes on our Facebook and Pinterest pages.
  • Crafts: Fall crafts are fun, interactive, and really capture the fun of the season. You can find easy (and free!) online templates for crafts that include the classic Thanksgiving Turkey crafts, pumpkin crafts, and much more. We post craft ideas on our Pinterest page. Check these articles we posted a while ago on free pumpkin carving templates and Halloween craft ideas for the family.
  • Volounteer: This is a great way to get your family out of the house and doing something meaningful. This is a great way to teach your kids how to help others and support their community. You can volounteer at food banks, community events, and even fundraisers. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Canadian Cancer Society hosts their Run for the Cure fundraiser across the country. There’s also a decent chance your local food bank could always use all the donations and volounteers they can get around Thanksgiving.
  • Game Night: A family game night is a perfect activity for cool fall evenings. You can play the classics like Monopoly and Yahtzee, or even make your own family board game! Making your own board game is fun and easy, you can use cardboard paper and other craft supplies. This is also a great way for your kids to use their imaginations.
  • Have a Movie Marathon: Does your family love Halloween movies? How about Thanksgiving specials? I’m looking at you, Charlie Brown specials! Turn your love of seasonal viewing into a fun family activity. This is super fun for a cooler fall evening. You can pop some popcorn, make some hot cocoa, and sit back and enjoy the classics as a family.
