Canadian Coupon Policy Guide: Store by Store
By Free.ca ·
Know the rules before you shop. Here is each major Canadian store's coupon policy including stacking rules and price matching.
Understanding each store's coupon policy is essential for Canadian shoppers who want to maximize their savings. Policies vary significantly between retailers, and knowing the rules prevents checkout frustrations and helps you plan the most effective savings strategy.
Walmart Canada
Walmart Canada accepts manufacturer coupons up to the value of the item. They do not double coupons. Walmart accepts price matching from local competitor flyers at most locations — show the competitor's price on the Flipp app or a physical flyer. The Walmart app includes digital rollback prices that are matched in-store.
Internet printed coupons are accepted at Walmart Canada as long as they have a valid barcode, expiration date, and clear terms. One coupon per item applies. Walmart does not accept coupons from other retailers (store-specific coupons). The price match and coupon combination makes Walmart a strong one-stop shopping destination for Canadian couponers.
Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, and No Frills
Loblaw banner stores accept manufacturer coupons and their own PC Optimum digital offers simultaneously. This is one of the best stacking opportunities in Canadian grocery — a manufacturer coupon reduces the price while a PC Optimum offer earns bonus points on the same item. The combined savings can make products effectively free.
Price matching policies vary by banner. No Frills and Real Canadian Superstore typically accept price matching from local competitor flyers. Loblaws locations may or may not price match depending on the individual store. Always check with your local store. All Loblaw banners scan PC Optimum cards for personalized offers and base point earning.
Shoppers Drug Mart
Shoppers Drug Mart accepts manufacturer coupons and PC Optimum offers simultaneously. During 20x points events, using a manufacturer coupon reduces your out-of-pocket cost while you still earn bonus points on the full shelf price. This combination is one of the most powerful stacking strategies in Canadian retail.
Shoppers also accepts competitor price matching at most locations. Digital coupons from the PC Optimum app can be combined with paper manufacturer coupons. The key is loading all digital offers before shopping and presenting paper coupons at checkout. Some Shoppers locations are more coupon-friendly than others.
Metro and Food Basics
Metro accepts manufacturer coupons and runs their own digital coupon program through the Metro app. They do not typically price match competitors. Food Basics, Metro's discount banner, accepts manufacturer coupons and has started accepting digital offers. Both stores participate in the Scene+ loyalty program for additional savings.
Metro's weekly flyer deals can be combined with manufacturer coupons for effective stacking. Their air miles partnership has ended, replaced by Scene+ points. Load Scene+ offers in the app before shopping at any Metro banner store.
Canadian Tire, Costco, and Others
Canadian Tire accepts manufacturer coupons and their own Triangle Rewards offers. They also accept Canadian Tire money (now digital through the Triangle app). Costco does not accept manufacturer coupons but runs their own member coupon booklet with significant savings. Their everyday prices often beat couponed prices at other stores anyway.
Sobeys and their affiliated banners accept manufacturer coupons alongside Scene+ digital offers. London Drugs accepts manufacturer coupons and runs their own promotions. Save-On-Foods accepts manufacturer coupons and participates in the More Rewards program. For each store you frequent, check their specific coupon policy page online for the most current rules and restrictions.
